4. Is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy effective? How long does it take to see results?
Based on semi-annual internal assessment data gathered in March 2025, 85% of the children we serve show improvement in functioning. Most children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) begin to show noticeable improvement within 6 to 12 months of starting consistent, high-quality intervention, especially when services are tailored to their needs. However, the type of service, intensity, and individual factors like age, developmental level, and co-occurring conditions can influence the timeline.
Parental involvement and consistency across settings (home, school, therapy) play a huge role in accelerating progress.
5. What care settings does my child qualify for?
When determining whether a child with autism should receive services in a clinic or home setting, several factors are considered. A combination of two settings may sometimes be recommended to ensure skill development across different environments.
Child-Specific Factors:
- Level of Support Needed – If the child has significant behavioral challenges, specialized clinic settings may provide a more controlled environment for intervention.
- Sensory Sensitivities – Some children may find the structured clinic environment overstimulating, making home-based services preferable.
- Social Skills Development – If the child needs structured social interaction, a clinic may provide more opportunities to engage with peers.
- Learning Style – Some children thrive in a structured, classroom-like environment (clinic), while others learn best in familiar settings (home).
- Medical or Safety Considerations – If the child has medical concerns or severe self-injurious behaviors, the clinic may offer better safety protocols.
Family & Environmental Factors
- Parental Involvement – If caregivers can actively participate in therapy, home-based services might be more beneficial for skill generalization.
- Home Environment – If the home is conducive to learning (quiet, structured), it may be an effective setting. If not, a clinic may be better.
- Access to Transportation – If the family has difficulty traveling, home-based therapy might be the best option.
- Consistency of Care – Clinics often offer more consistency in therapist availability and resources.
Therapeutic Goals
- Generalization of Skills – If the goal is to apply skills in a natural setting, home-based therapy may be preferred.
- Intensive Skill Building – For highly structured interventions (e.g., Applied Behavior Analysis – ABA), a clinic setting may be more effective.
- Group Interaction Needs – If the child needs peer interactions, a clinic setting may provide structured group sessions.
